Andrew L. Gotianun, Sr.

ANDREW L. GOTIANUN SR. spent his teenage years salvaging ships in the Visayas to supplement the family income during and after the Second World War. After the untimely demise of his father, Gotianun found himself head of his family at the tender age of 20. It was a responsibility he took seriously.

The volatile nature of the shipping business, however, soon prompted Gotianun and his young wife, Mercedes, to explore other opportunities in Manila in the mid-50s.

 

Rising costs take toll on Jollibee’s first half profit

Mirroring the effects of a slowing economy marked by rising costs of oil and commodities, fastfood giant Jollibee Foods Corp. reported a 15-percent drop in net earnings in the first half of the year as expenses increased.

In a financial report filed with securities regulators, Jollibee said net earnings declined to P1.125 billion from P1.32 billion even as its revenues expanded 12.47 percent to P20.83 billion.

System-wide sales, a measure of sales to consumers, rose eight percent to P27.55 billion from P24.93 billion.
 

SM posts investment growth

SM INVESTMENTS Corporation (SM), the country's leading mall operator, has reported a net income of P6.5 billion or 14 percent increase for the first half of 2008.

SM president Harley Sy said: "SM's sound performance during the first half of the year amid many market challenges reinforces the defensive position that SM has taken over the years. Our businesses have been equipped to sail through headwinds of spiraling fuel and food prices and changing consumer patterns."

He added "we continue to take a long-term perspective so that we view the market turbulence as being temporary. As such, we remain on course as far as our expansion program is concerned."

 

NG debt stock up 1.4% to P3.927 T in May

The National Government’s debt stock went up in May due to the depreciation of the peso against the dollar which increased the value of the country’s loans, borrowed mainly from foreign creditors.

The Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) Monday reported that the National Government’s debt increased by 1.4 percent  to P3.927 trillion as of end-May from the end-April level.

Of the total outstanding debt, the government owes P1.630 trillion or 42 percent to foreign creditors, and P2.297 trillion or 58 percent to local creditors.
 

ERC orders cut in systems loss charges

Zenaida DucutThe Energy Regulatory Commission on Tuesday issued a draft resolution ordering distribution utilities to lower the system loss cap to eight percent from 9.5 percent.

ERC chairwoman Zenaida Ducut, however, said the agency has yet to determine the actual amount to be cut off from the existing charge.

"I have yet to calculate the amount in terms of pesos but definitely, if we're able to lower the system loss charge being passed on to consumers, the same lowered charges will also apply to the utilities," Ducut said.
