RP software exports to hit $1 billion by 2010

Philippine software exports are expected to reach almost $1 billion by 2010, more than twice the $423 million earned in 2007, an industry association said Wednesday.

Cristina Coronel, president of the Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA), said this was based on the robust annual growth of 30 percent the industry has been enjoying in recent years.

Currently, local companies have been targetting US firms. To further promote the Philippines as a major player in the global software outsourcing industry, in July the PSIA and the New York-based office of the Department of Trade and Industry conducted a roadshow in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York. Similar efforts are lined up to tap other markets such as Europe, Japan, New Zealand, and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Wireless landline buoys Bayantel revenues

Driven by increased subscription of its wireless landline service, first half revenues of Bayan Telecommunications (Bayantel) grew 18 percent to P3.07 Billion from Php2.6 Billion during the same period last year.

The 30 percent year-on-year growth of its Bayan wireless landline (BWL) subscribers, which totaled 160,000 as of end June, beat industry growth of –4 percent during the same period.

BWL offers unlimited local calling and texting within Metro Manila and free intra-Bayantel landline calls and texts nationwide. BWL services appeal to those who are on-the-go but prefer to use portable handsets to reach other landlines.

US says China has 'nothing to fear' from Internet

The United States on Wednesday ramped up pressure on China to live up to Olympic ideals by ending human rights abuses, as President George W. Bush promised "nothing to fear" from Internet freedom.

With nine days remaining before the Games begin in Beijing, China sparked an uproar with its plans to censor the Internet during the Olympics, and US lawmakers responded by passing a resolution urging China to change its ways.

"President Bush has long said that China has nothing to fear from greater access to the Internet or to the press or from more religious freedom and human freedom and human rights," press secretary Dana Perino said.
