US says China has 'nothing to fear' from Internet

The United States on Wednesday ramped up pressure on China to live up to Olympic ideals by ending human rights abuses, as President George W. Bush promised "nothing to fear" from Internet freedom.

With nine days remaining before the Games begin in Beijing, China sparked an uproar with its plans to censor the Internet during the Olympics, and US lawmakers responded by passing a resolution urging China to change its ways.

"President Bush has long said that China has nothing to fear from greater access to the Internet or to the press or from more religious freedom and human freedom and human rights," press secretary Dana Perino said.

Project to rebuild Internet gets $12M, bandwidth

NEW YORK - A massive project to redesign and rebuild the Internet from scratch is inching along with $12 million in government funding and donations of network capacity by two major research organizations.

Many researchers want to rethink the Internet's underlying architecture, saying a "clean-slate" approach is the only way to truly address security and other challenges that have cropped up since the Internet's birth in 1969.

On behalf of the government, BBN Technologies Inc. is overseeing the planning and design of the Global Environment for Network Innovations, or GENI, a network on which researchers will be able to test new ideas without damaging the current Internet.

World's No. 1: China has 253M Internet users

BEIJING - China's fast-growing population of Internet users has surpassed the United States to become the world's biggest, with 253 million people online at the end of June, the government reported Friday.

China's Web usage is growing at explosive rates despite government efforts to block access to sites deemed subversive or pornographic. The financial size of China's online market, though, still trails those of the United States, South Korea and other countries.
